The Man, the Chief, The Maestro

"The sun shone, having no alternative, on the nothing new."

Ahhhh, the wonderful Samuel Beckett .........he knew how to say it in the fewest words.

I know, isn't he sublime?! I was going to post on his centenary too, but apparently you beat me to it!

I tried this weekend, but one hour of Waitng for Godot and I was on my third gin and tonic. What the hell is it about? Was Pozzo god or not? Why did he go dumb, what is the story with Lucky? Were they soldiers, where they dead? Was is Purgatory?
I tried, I swear I really did, mock my philistine ways all you want, but so help me I tried.

Nah don't worry about it. I've lost count of the plays I've watched with funny scenery and odd stilted dialogue with strange pauses. i used to feel inferior, but now i just look at all the fancy plasterwork in the theatre and try and estimate the shear stress in the balcony cantilever.

pronounce it shear-stress.

I'm not a big fan of plays. I like opera. I like the Liceu, Docky and many of their productions, when I am there. I am going to il Divo in Palau Sant Jordi BCN on the 17th of May. But old Beckett has confounded me. You may all mock me at will over il Divo, I know it is barely one step up from Manilo, but meh, waddyagonnado?

FMC - his line of bleak comedy is a bit of an acquired taste, but if you get into him he was a wry old bean - and apparently a bit of a naughty womaniser on the sly too!

Doccy, strange pauses and funny dialogue... are you talking Chekov here, if so I agree, that Russkie mostly leaves me cold, all that unremitting misery and angst

No SB I am not. I always preferred Mr Sulu, sadly no longer with us.
